Curriculum

Mableton Elementary’s school-wide STEAM program has many characteristics that differentiate itself from the regular curriculum that is found in other Cobb County Schools.  One of the greatest differences is the way in which it all began.  Our transition from arts enhancement to arts integration help us to distinguish ourselves from other STEAM and STEM focused schools in the state.

In 2015, under the direction of a new principal and district representatives, an arts integration transition shifted our focus to a STEAM curriculum.  This transition is proving to be beneficial to our students as we help them develop critical 21st century work skills such as collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking.

Kindergarten-Students will begin to learn and demonstrate all STEAM Standards of Practice in hands-on activities.  Students will ask and answer questions while solving problems.

1st-2nd Grades- Students, with some assistance from adults, identify, demonstrate, and evaluate how to use all STEAM Standards of Practice. Students will begin to connect STEAM content with other disciplines through inquiry, problem or project-based learning.

3rd-5th Grades-Students independently identify, demonstrate, apply, critique, and evaluate how and when to use all STEAM Standards of Practice in hands-on activities, tasks or challenges. Students will integrate STEAM disciplines with other disciplines while engaging in inquiry, problem, and project-based Learning.  Students will research STEAM careers.

What is unique about our Curriculum?

  • Our teachers have developed curriculum maps to outline how STEAM content will delivered throughout the school year.

  • Our teachers have developed their own design challenges to integrate the grade level Common Core Standards.

  • Each design challenge includes a problem, background content that is shared with students, literary and writing connections as well as supplemental resources for technology.
